@DrFeelgood I can make an exception on that one if you’d like, they’re actually pretty compatible in the sense that they’re both kind of outcasts. It would make sense that they’ve kept in touch.

Floral Cove, a quiet town with local shops and local problems. Reese had lived here since he was in diapers. Everyone was so innocent and nice back then, before the hormones, before the social statuses and before the sh*t show that was high school. People were all a**holes now, and Reese often found himself on the receiving end of their bullsh*t. These were the biggest of his worries though, he complained about it, but as a child of divorce he got two of everything, right? That’s what people told him to think, honestly he just wanted to graduate and leave this hell hole.

Reese was walking down the street; his headphones plugged into his phone, and playing some “Emo/Punk Trash” as his bullies called it. The light drizzle of rain pittered and pattered on his hood, and dark spots dotted his clothes. He’d forgotten his umbrella at home, just his luck. A copper sports car was speeding behind him; as it came passed him, it pulled toward him and hit a puddle. The water leaped into the air and came down on him in a loud splash. “Sorry Flower Boy! You needed watering!” He heard a voice yell followed by the laughter of a few passengers. The car sped off. “F***ing pricks!” Reese muttered to himself. He continued his way down the street towards school. Senior year was going to be a bitch....

Olivia didn't mind the rain, the constant drumming of water hitting the pavement as well as the darkened sky let her blend with the multiple bodies entering the school. When you were as unremarkably plain as Via, you learned to enjoy not being targeted or spotted from within a crowd. Of course she couldn't always avoid the occasional run in with some unwanted attention. At least unlike Reese, no one ever made fun of her to her face. There were just whispers and rumors about the mute girl who stared off into space, watching ghosts pass by all the while being as see-through as possible.

A familiar voice caught her attention and she swiveled her head around to see Drew and Reese start a conversation, well within ear shot of her. "Wow hello to you too Drew." She pulled her hood off before shaking water droplets off of her umbrella, closing it and stowing it back into her backpack before leaving their side. Via couldn't remember the last time she'd spoke to either of them and it stung a little that even those she'd opened up to had drifted apart only to maintain a friendship with just themselves.

Of course the same couldn't be said for Alex and Katherine, seeing them doing their normal routine it seemed like only yesterday that they all met up after packing their things away. She shrugged off her own backpack once she got to her quiet spot between a drinking fountain and the neighboring wall, sitting down and out of sight.

Reese heard a voice call out to him, it was Drew, they’d been friends since preschool. “Well, it is raining outside isn’t it?” He replied in a matter of fact tone. Alex passed by with a weak looking smile towards him. He hadn’t really talked to her or any of his old friends for that matter, just Drew. A grin forced itself over his face. Reese didn’t like to dwell on his feelings so he usually just downplayed them. “Just some car that hit a puddle on the way here, no big deal. What about you? Still no car?” He asked, shifting the focus on Drew. Just then Via walked by followed by a thunderous entrance by Kat. It’d been forever since the group got together. Then there was Billy, he’d never show up on time so no surprise there.

Drew offered his gym clothes to Reese, “I’m alright, I’ll just air dry.” He said eyeing the jock, Kat flashed a smile at them as she passed. The jock shot him a grin as they walked by. The dirtbag in question was Andy, one hell of a quarterback and one hell of an a**hole. Reese hated him most of all. The floor beneath him was starting to form a puddle so he began walking towards their lockers.

“It’s ridiculous...” he said to Drew. “Those half cracked smiles, it’s the whole (Hey there can’t help you, but I’m still there for you), thing.” He said slightly annoyed. He missed everyone, but he didn’t like to express it or even know how. “Your parents are divorced, you know the look.” Reese said calmly. He was done with all this sympathy, people looked at him like he was on one of those dog pound commercials. He gripped his fist, before loosening it, “Listen man I know I’m an a**hole, but tha-“ he stopped. He shoved it down again, “If you had a car you could give me a ride!” He yelled in joking manner. Reese punched him in the shoulder.

The warning bell rang, Reese gathered his books and his tolerance and made way to first period. He sat in the back by the window. He liked to stare out side and daydream. It was boring, but it beat having to listen to his dad talk about the logistics of law. “Mr. Wallace!, Reese!” A voice faded in. Reese looked over the teacher had been calling on him. “Huh?” The teacher looked displeased. “Answer the question.” The teacher insisted. “Could you repeat the question? I didn’t hear you.” He replied. Reese played like the teacher wasn’t being clear. “Your literary quote, Mr. Wallace!” The teacher was clearly annoyed. Reese stared at her face, a crusty old and mean English teacher. “Is there something on my face? Or am I just that pretty?” The teacher shouted, clearly annoyed. Reese sighed for a moment, “ got two” he paused.

“I mentally shake hands with you for your answer, despite its inaccuracy.”

“’Am I hideous, Jane?’
‘Very, sir: you always were, you know.’” He smiled, then exclaimed “-Charlotte Brontë,Jane Eyre”, the class laughed at the response.

First period was as rowdy as ever with Reese making the class erupt in snickers and giggles. Via tried not to shoot him a look of appreaction for his antics. If this had been when the gang was together, she’d have thrown him a subtle thumbs up or shared a laugh of her own with Drew or Alex, maybe even crack a smile with Kat. That however was then and this was now.

She contented herself with focusing on the corner of her desk instead, waiting for the teacher to either send him to the principal or scold him herself before getting back on with class. Teachers had a knack for making kids such as herself seen, maybe it was because they were so acute to those whom didn’t want to be called upon. Via prayed that today of all days, she could go unnoticed as she usually did. Already in a bad mood, she didn’t want to say anything more that could get herself in any unwanted situation. It wasn’t her style to make a whole classroom light up as Reese did, it usually was her speciality to get everyone to stop talking all together.

(Personally, I don’t have any issues with it. It might make a good side plot for you and @copacetic , that’s one thought. But we can have a quick brainstorming session while we’re waiting if you’d like.)

(Hmmmm, we have Chiefs of Sheriff Department = intell on the case, Floristry/dinner(s)= local and public gossip and rumors, hardware store= supplies as well as local opinions and rumors and library for research and town history. Plus whatever I’ve forgotten. Idk, what do you think could add to the resources? Doesn’t even have to if you don’t want to.)
