She was stuck in the miserably cycle of her life as an experiment until she was 15, when S.H.I.E.L.D. had stormed the facility she was in. She made a break for it as it was freedom to her and Natasha Romanoff was the one who rescued her to bring her to safety. Yet even after being rescued, she was terrified of going back to Hydra and was very untrusting towards everyone except to Natasha. Somehow she could trust her as she was rescued by her and over the years she was given so much help to show that not everyone was going to hurt her like she grew up thinking. But with the chaos that ensued from being around the Avengers, she was trained by S.H.I.E.L.D. to be a helping hand to them. She tried to grow up to have a normal life but she wasn't normal so that was hard for her to deal with. Not to mention she wasn't used to the world around her. Then there was the death of Natasha who had became her adopted mother over the years and she broke down, the one person who truly understood her and loved her was gone. Now she tries to keep herself busy with college while trying to avoid talking about she felt so alone with no family. She was all alone again and she hated that but she was used to it from being with Hydra for so long in the past.

His reason being that he didn't want for her to get caught up in his dilemma of being cursed to suffer horrible fates in his bloodline so their child would be cursed as well. That thought being thinking of herself as a monster came from causing a horrible house fire when she was 17 when she accidentally lashed out at Regina who was trying to keep her home instead of letting her go out. By the time help came to rescue them from the fire, Ember was unharmed by the fire while Regina was put into a deep coma which Ember hates herself for hurting her mother. Now she just tries to learn more about her heritage in hopes of understanding herself better and to try to get help in controlling her powers better so she doesn't harm others.
