SIN AND SENTENCE; [Tyrannical Rule, modernized AU available] be sober-minded; be watchful. your adversary the devil prowls around like a. roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  They pulled the rag over his head, holding it in place and robbing him of any possible relief.  His nasal cavity burned and lungs constricted as water smothered him.  As quickly as it started, it stopped.  He choked and gagged and gasped for air once they took the rag away.  The ringing in his ears drowned out the sound of his racing heartbeat.  It all came in short bursts.  They covered his face, poured the water, and let his body panic until they ran dry.  They allowed him a moment of respite, asking a single question as he tried to recover.  When he refused to answer, they repeated the process.  He couldn't have said how long they kept it up.  It felt like an eternity before they abruptly ceased, releasing him from crude restraints.  One man offered a meager towel whilst another told him he was free to go. "You're cleared," he continued, and just like that he returned to the palace.  Upon his arrival, Vicente Salazar demanded his immediate presence.  He beamed at Nico and clapped him on a damp shoulder.  How proud he was that the body double passed his test.  Nico's mock torturers had asked where the real Vicente Salazar was hiding, yet he said nothing.  Salazar assumed blind loyalty, but it was fear that kept Nico chained to the barbarous leader. Fear that his loved ones would be killed, fear that more innocent people would be killed, fear that he would be killed.  In truth, he never knew his president's whereabouts.  The man was drowning in the violence and chaos he created, and Nico hoped he had the strength to break the imaginary shackles before it was too late.

GARDEN OF THORNS; [889-??] Demoralization, humiliation, and crass vulgarities; such was life in gilded Byzantium for a humbled warrior.  Greco slave owner, Florian Melodus, boasted about his taming of the barbarian queen Rasha.  He spun a great tale, recounting a battle in which he overtook the Varangian.  How heinous and savage he painted her and her ilk, and how valiant and powerful he painted himself.  Of course, it was all a lie.  No skirmish was fought in the traditional sense of the word.  Jealous of her status and personal wealth, Ibba Hoskuldsson sought to undermine his older sister and assume command of her Geatish-Varangian band.  Initiating a shadow war against Rasha, Ibba met with his sister's enemies, Melodus and other Byzantine nobles.  He promised to deliver the scourge of the Empire in exchange for a ceasefire and a lucrative trading arrangement.  So, they came in the night, as quiet and as deadly as the horned viper, and took her without bloodshed.  They confined her to a cage, she, the wild beast, who terrorized inhabitants of the Byzantine Empire.  Melodus relished the opportunity to exploit her battle skills, forcing her to fight as "Amazon."  It belittled and insulted her as a Geat to fight under the Greek-given moniker, but she did not protest.  She would live this life until the gods showed her the way back to Kiev.  Then she would have her revenge.

   'Paterson is a cesspool of wicked people and immoral deeds,' they said of the immigrant-laden New Jersey city.  'Home to the ambitious self-serving, to the entitled pricks, to the predators and scavengers.'  The heir to Quicker Kipper Shipping, an opportunistic smuggling extraordinaire, called Paterson home and surprised none.  Since 1936, QKS had been corrupted by the young heir's greed, transforming the company into something his father no longer recognized.  Once a proud and authentic company, nowadays QKS deliveries carried more than they legally claimed.  From illegal goods like drugs and girls to products merely aiming to evade the government's tax, anything could be hidden amongst legitimate merchandise.  For the unprincipled, the scum of Paterson, Holiday Kipper of QKS was there to provide an invaluable service.  It made the heir King of the Gutters, King of the Dishonest, King of Smuggling.

   Though he reaped in riches, the smuggling business wasn't without its unique hazards and obstacles.  Law enforcement posed the greatest risk to Holiday's operation, but they weren't what kept him up at night.  Rivals and enemies made along the way didn't play like the cops.  Police officers wouldn't spray his place with a couple of Thompsons, they wouldn't harm his precious little girl, they wouldn't bring mayhem down on Holly's whole world.  After several assassination attempts and delivery truck bombings, Holly realized who sought his hide.  Roscoe Huber had been a rival from the getgo.  He ran a similar operation, but it was primitive and lacked a law-abiding facet to divert prying eyes.  Huber was jealous, having lost much of his credibility to frequent cop seizures and many of his patrons to Holly.  Despite the genuine threat Huber posed to him, considering their numerous altercations, Holiday thought it impossible to lose to Huber.  Arrogance blinded the younger man to the point of underestimating Huber.  Though remaining vigilant, he tricked himself into believing in his invincibility.

DECENNIUM; [Reno, Nevada; 1950-60, modernized AU available] Huber was dead, found in his own home half-skinned (presumably whilst alive).  Mark Kipper was dead, his head caved in with a marble ashtray.  Cody Kipper was dead, too, dying from a broken heart hardly a year after his older son.  During his father's funeral, the realization sank in: it was all his now.  Everything he desired, he now had.  Yet, he wanted more.  Holiday began to eye a growing Nevada city, and in 1950 moved QKS headquarters to Reno.  His aggressive expansion now centered in the western state raised countless eyebrows.  Especially from those in Vegas.  'Ah, just like home,' and he smiled.
LOVELACE; [historical & modern AUs available] Holiday's narcissism knew no bounds.  Never having outgrown his self-centeredness in childhood, it flourished to define his adulthood.  Money and power were ever the covet of QKS's dark prince, and he never had enough.  Despite witnessing again and again how greed dictated his actions, his wife, siblings, and parents pleaded ignorance of his egotistical character.  Some would have loved them for it, but Holly detested their willful nescience.  It weighed him down as he felt compelled to put up a facade to soothe their distaste for his true nature.  Veiled by a silver tongue's glib words, Holiday maintained the role of 'Tom,' a modest and thoughtful man, whilst around family.  'Tom' was no criminal, that was Holiday.  Oh, how he craved to embrace his true character with someone who understood, someone akin.  But did anyone like that exist?

      STORY

   Just a few weeks prior, when Ira Diamond would look at himself in the mirror, he did not know the man who stared back.  He saw only a hollow figure, trapped in a soulless, miserable existence.  But after the accident, for the first time in a long time, he felt like he recognized himself.  His remaining eye brightened with an unfamiliar liveliness, his hair felt thicker and healthier, his skin was soft and glowed.  Ira had finally killed the power his family had over him, and he wished he had done it so much sooner.  Although it wasn't the intended outcome, his disfigurement, it was the very thing he needed to escape their clutches.  Once they learned of his attempt, they stuck him in a mental hospital and abandoned him.  The doctors recommended he pursue reconstructive surgery, but Ira outright refused.  He feared the procedure would return to his old ways.  He couldn't live like that again, always pleasing others and dying that little bit more inside with every self-denying action.  He couldn't let them undo everything.  He wouldn't go back to that little room with a gun in his shaking hand.  A second chance had been given to him and he wouldn't throw it away so easily.

   Despite embracing his new physical form, he did not fare as comfortably mentally.  His doctor explained that brain trauma resulted in his having developed Broca's aphasia, a language disorder.  Before he was diagnosed, he had never heard of Broca's aphasia (why should he have?)  It was one of the better aphasias to have, his therapist insisted, but that didn't mean it didn't have its own trials.  All facets of language output were effected; speech, writing, even manual if he had learned sign language.  He retained an overall competent comprehension of others but struggled to speak anywhere near as fluently.  Even with the progress made every single day, Ira grew despondent with his communication difficulties.  His speech therapist suggested art therapy to help him cope and express himself.  Art became his crutch and his saving grace.  Though he still worked on his speech, Ira began to prefer sketching and painting to communicate.  He knew he'd never talk like he used, so he practiced and experimented with his new craft.  After eleven months in the hospital, he was discharged without officials fearing he'd try to off himself.  Ira left Utah for Connecticut where he intended to start over as a painter.

      VERSES

GIFT OF GUILT; Bastion Financial owner, Ian Diamond, is known to his friends, colleagues, and clients as a kindly middle-aged man, unfailing in hospitality and agreeableness.  Behind closed doors, however, he is an overbearing and belligerent man.  None knew that side of Ian better than his youngest son, Ira.  Growing up in the Diamond household, Ira was never good enough.  He was the Diamond black sheep for reasons he could never determine.  Whilst the eldest, Ari, was showered with praise and affection for average achievements, Ira knew only criticism and ridicule in spite of his excellence.  Still, for all his apparent flaws and unworthiness, he was expected to follow his father and brother into the family business.  Ari advanced his career quickly, ever the apple of Ian's eye.  Ira, on the other hand, incurred his father's wrath at every sign of ambition.  Was he truly to stay a lowly bank teller his whole life?  God, help him.
THE ART OF DYING; Ira utilized and honed various art forms for different manners.  He drifted towards surrealism when confronting negative people or unpleasant things.  Rich and dark colors, harsh lines, and oil paints dominated these pieces.  Realism stole the show when he found himself in a positive environment, especially around people he liked.  Whilst in the hospital, he gifted his therapist and doctors with portraits and flattering sketches to show his appreciation.  However, when confused by someone or something, he often answered with expressionism.  Rarely, he also expressed humor in an abstract expressionist manner.  Having developed skills for several different artistic styles, it helped others learn how he communicates despite his disability.  Still, he knew not all of his Hartford clients would be understanding and accomodating, so he hired an interpreter to speak for him.  With Kendyll Long at the helm, Ira felt as if he finally had a leg up in the world.  He was doing something with his life, doing what he wanted.  Perhaps the accident was the best thing to happen to him after all.
MAN IN THE BOX; It wasn't a surprise to Ira that there were folks out there who still gawked at the "freaks" of the world.  It was, however, surprising that they wanted to gawk at him.  Whilst in the hospital, he was approached by a handler, a scout of sorts.  The stranger offered to house, clothe, and feed him in exchange for active participation in their employer's underground freakshow.  They wanted his work, his talent for painting an accurate discernment of any given individual, and his marred face.  No one would miss him if he disappeared, not his family who never understood him.  Not his friends who never cared.  He accepted the proposition, feeling as though he had no other alternative.  Besides, could performing for rich bastards with too much time and money on their hands really be so bad?
