Laura grew up with her grandfather due to the fact her father murdered her mother during a bad alcoholic episode that left her with a scar on her shoulder from a broken beer bottle her father cut her with, after she told her father to stop hurting her mother. Due to this traumatic experience Laura decided to stop talking unless she had to or trusted the person, making her selectively mute. Even though she is comfortable talking to her grandfather, he is understanding to her choice to talk seldomly.. she is self conscious of her voice now and decided that writing her feelings was better.
