History:
Born out of wedlock to a lowborn elven woman who worked as an innkeeper – the decrepit village containing more knock-up shacks than proper homes. Azriel’s mother (Naesatra Kiiphyr) was fooled into thinking that the mighty Duke Selanar Da’Neer – who had been passing through the mountains – fell in love with her and would return for her hand once his current responsibilities were tended to. Naesatra was young (just turned 18) and knew little of the sly ways of men when it came to using women for their own gain. The Duke took her to bed and left without a word with his consort the following morning. Naesatra was left alone, and soon found herself confirmed with child just over a month later.

Deciding to keep the baby should her love return one day, Azriel was born 8 months later. He possessed the striking silver hair that his mother and her bloodline bore but retained the forest green eyes that had been so like his father’s. To almost no one’s surprise, the Duke did not return for the young woman, with not even so much as a messenger or letter, and she raised their son mostly independently. However, she was offered help from the other villages and distant relatives that had all become a very close-knit family in their tiny village province that was so far away from any sort of civilisation.

When the boy reached 8 years of age, Naesatra decided to write to the Duke and inform him of their son’s existence, and should they marry, the boy would be the next heir to the Da’Neer house. The woman had been wary to avoid using the boy’s true surname, especially when travellers came through the village and visited the inn, wishing to avoid causing the father any ill will by knowledge travelling he had fathered a bastard in the mountains. Such actions were frowned upon, especially from a man with such an honourable title. Since birth, Azriel retained the family name of his mother’s (Kiiphyr).

Young Azriel was a boisterous character and made friends quickly with the other children in the village, what few there were. He was also well known to the adults for his mischievous acts, and witty personality. His uncle Ivaran (brother to Naesatra) became his primary mentor whilst his mother remained tied up with her business. The uncle taught his nephew in many languages along with the history of many races in the kingdom. However, when the nephew reached 10 years, on the sly the man also taught him how to handle a blade both in close combat and at a distance. Over the years, the boy honed his skill, but his combat training remained secret from his mother and the other villagers.

It was suspected that the letter containing Azriel’s existence never reached its destination, for a reply never came, and the boy remained oblivious to who his father was. However, 3 years after the letter was sent the village was raided and put to the torch by a horde of bandits. Naesatra protected her son by smuggling him out of the inn, but she didn’t get much further and became trapped inside the burning building. There she perished, and Azriel was taken by the attackers before being sold as a slave at the closest ocean port. At 11 years of age the boy attempted to escape before his sale by using the skill he’d been trained with by his uncle, but he greatly lacked in experience and size when going up against a large group of well-seasoned men. He never heard from his uncle Ivaran again, so he believed that he too, had died in the village attack.

Azriel remained a slave in a human Lord’s household for the next 15 years, put to sowing the fields, cleaning the manor, maintaining the land, along with many other jobs. Even low-paid servants treated him poorly, and he was beaten profusely as a child as a way to tame his wild behaviour. Over the years his true self got chipped away, turning him into a cold and almost emotionless soul, so much that he was not phased when the Lord’s wife took him into her bed not long after he turned 17, forced to become her secret whore for the remainder of his service in their household.

The man’s magical elven gifts began to slowly surface as he aged, which did not go unnoticed. As a precaution, the Lord demanded an alchemist to concoct a brew that the slave was required to drink once per week during the remaining time of service. The potion worked for several years, before his natural gifts began to become accustomed to the dowager ingredients, and so would cause bursts of power at random times that Azriel was unable to control. The decision was made to enhance his slave tattoos to become a physical bind, instead of a consumable one. Where once only his wrists presented his ownership and title of slave, the tattoos travelled, decorating his entire torso in intricate patterns, finishing at his chin and low around his hips. This binding proved successful. However, these markings bore extreme sensitivity, and sometimes physical touch often resulted in a feeling of discomfort. Because of this, he began to have an aversion towards being touched.

It wasn’t until he reached full maturity at the age of 26 that he bore strong facial resemblance to his father. Suspicion rose amongst the household of his blood lineage, and despite no proof of Azriel’s heritage coming to light, the Lord did not want to be associated with a slave that could potentially be a bastard heir to one of the most powerful men in the kingdom – concerned for the reputation of their house should word get out. Therefore, the elf was cast out with nothing but a small pack of supplies and the clothes on his back.

Decades passed where the man travelled alone throughout the kingdom, mostly making a name for himself in the fighting pits where he earned the most money. He used the money to buy adequate weapons and armour for which he trained in private before he would retire for the night, wherever he had chosen to make camp. It wasn’t until he began becoming popular for his stealthy mercenary work that he began to be sought out by houses that held more weight. Such a reputation began to reach the ears of nobility, and eventually that of royalty.

Azriel was invited to an audience with the human noble houses and the royal’s court, including the King and Queen themselves. They requested his services to banish a rival house that had been plaguing them for the last few years and wished for them to be dealt with silently, especially since their last Spymaster had failed during their attempt. The elf accepted and carried out his duty effectively, with no trace of his involvement of the house’s demise. He was granted a large sum of money and the position of the royal court’s spymaster on his return to the palace, but not before his true identity was confirmed. His reputation of being a Da’Neer bastard had followed him, and Duke Selanar Da’Neer was summoned before the throne to confirm his son’s identity, and for the royal maester to carry out bloodwork.

Selanar denied any knowledge of having fathered a son by anyone but his wife (Duchess Allynna Da’Neer), declaring he had only ever received daughters from his marriage and had been faithful since their union almost 65 years ago. But, once Azriel was presented to him, the resemblance was uncanny, and Selanar could not deny the silver hair that he remembered so distinctly matched the young innkeeper he’d bedded more almost 6 decades previous. Azriel, unfortunately had no memory of his mother or uncle ever speaking much about his father, so could not confirm nor deny what the Duke said.

Only once the maester’s bloodwork testing was achieved, was the match of bloodline confirmed. And so Azriel was officially a bastard of Da’Neer, and immediately bore hatred for the father that had allowed his mother so willingly to raise him by herself, and with no financial support. He sensed lies and deceit, and not only because the Duke had falsely declared his faithfulness to his own wife, but also because he still had memory of his mother writing letters by candlelight and handing them with haste to a passing courier. The memory was blurry, but it was there. He believed that his mother had most definitely attempted to contact Selanar, but again, letters were easily lost during transport and there was no physical proof of those letters ever having been received. Furthermore, Selanar continued to deny that such letters had reached him once questioned. He admitted to his adultery before the King and Queen, and sought forgiveness from the gods. It was granted, under the condition that due to Azriel’s support to the crown with his particular skills, he be legitimised and bear the name of Da’Neer and be welcomed to their house.

Although both Azriel and his father were not keen on the idea, the paperwork was stamped and signed with the royal signature. The former silently accepting the legitimacy just to spite his biological father. If it meant the man had to recognise his son as a true heir as opposed to just his bastard, and it put a rift in his marriage and other family affairs, it was enough to satisfy him for now. After all, he held no proof that his father knew anything of his existence, and did not possess spies in his household to try and find out that truth.

Azriel remained at the palace after being risen to the rank of Spymaster and remains to this day a high member within the trusted royal court. Contact with his father remains minimal, and he had only fleetingly seen the rest of the Da’Neer family from a distance at royal affairs that required all their attendances.

In terms of his responsibilities, Azriel oversees the eyes and ears within a large amount of the kingdom via spies, and organises for the “handling” of those individuals or houses that step out of line. This sometimes requires him to travel to either handle matters in person, or to avoid messages holding private information from getting intercepted.

The elf trained himself to the rank of master assassin, and continues to hone his skills inherited from his father’s side via a mage that oversees his training in the mastering of magic as a whole. Whilst the mentor was able to make the unbinding of Azriel's magic soon after his admittance as a court member, he was unable to reverse the slave tattoos he'd received because of it, so they remain burned into his body forevermore.
The use of magic is frowned upon, and so he uses it only when absolutely necessary and almost never within the presence of any court members, especially those who hold resentment just due to his elven race, and with those who still silently view him as the “Bastard of Da’Neer”. Over the last 40 years as a member of the royal court Azriel gained many titles, a number of those well-earned, but also ones of non-official value that are spoken in a spiteful nature in private.

Secretly, he works to aid his own elven people who remain tied to slavery around the world, and to offer them refuge and support in provinces close to the capital where he can visit them in person, whilst also finding them new lives to start with their new found freedom.
This endeavor remains secret due to the conflict that could be ignited in countries where slavery is very much legal. Elven slaves in particular are seen as a sign of hierarchy in the nobility chain.

Due to the secrecy, the newly freed slaves still bare open hatred for him as he doesn't declare himself as their saviour, bearing it too great a risk for his position in the royal lion's den, instead choosing to work behind others, or go by different names with the use of masks to hide his true identity when he's required in the field.
Its not uncommon for those of his own race to call him "blood traitor" or "royal whore" for their belief of him working with humans for his own gain and avoid a second slavery sentence, unknowing of his true service to his people.
