escaped from Galifrey
the TARDIS was taken, which in turn really made him stuck on Galifrey back then, which he didn't find until some years later.
he found out about the timeless child and in a fit of his own rage, managed to destroy a lot of Galifrey himself. whatever happened to the rest he doesn't know.
but he ran before it was completely destroyed, angry at them, at himself with only his TARDIS. (galifrey wasn't saved the first time) so now he travels, sometimes on his own sometimes with a companion.
he just wishes he wasn't like this, running from his own history.
