Robert saw the last of the surviving crew escaped the battle. He then went down to the deck below to make sure nobody remains in the ship when she goes to davy jones locker, there he saves several more men that were trapped by collapsed bulkhead.

The quartermaster searched the ship twice, ensured he got everyone out before he jumps into water, by that time all the row boats had gone far away. He started swimming towards the closest island he remembers in the nautical charts.

It would take several days, he killed some sharks that went after his wounds and ate the sharks to survive the long distance swimming, pinpointing his location by looking at the stars at night.
