Yang Xinhai was one of the worst serial killers in China's history. His relatives now living in Pennsylvania often claims he was obsessed with a phrase he was known to talk about "Plato Flats", a fictional place he created for stories of murder he had begun writing. His stories were written on everything Yang had. He was also known for having drawings and outlines for various other ideas in "Mead" notebooks. Often there were depictions of ideas he had for stories and movies that he wanted to create... all about murders.
He confessed to killing 65 people in central China from 1999 to 2003. At night, he would enter his victims' homes and kill everyone inside with axes, cleavers, hammers and shovels. He often raped the female victims. He was arrested in northern China on November 23, 2003; found guilty after a trial lasting less than an hour on February 1, 2004 and executed for his crimes on February 2, 2004. According to Yang, the motive for the killings was that he was dumped by his girlfriend who had found out about a previous prison term for burglary and rape and taking out his anger on society.
He confessed to 18 crimes in Henan, 2 in Hebei, 2 in East China's Anhui Province and 1 in East China's Shandong Province since 2000. The toll of his crime spree goes beyond the dead and raped. Another 10 people were seriously injured. In some instances, Yang put whole families to death. On December 6, 2002, Yang killed Liu Zhanwei, a farmer in the Liuzhuang Village of Henan's Xiping County who was in his 30s, his mother, wife, son and daughter. Only Liu's father, 68 year old Liu Zhongyuan survived because he slept in a new house that night. "We planned to move to the new house on December 9, 2002. Who could imagine that they experienced such tragedy only 3 days before?" the surviving father cried. Liu Zhongyuan recalled seeing his granddaughter that fateful morning. She was lying on the ground with a hole in her head. The room was full of blood. "My wife could still bat her eyelids but could not speak anymore." Liu Zhanwei, his wife and son were all found with bloody faces. Liu Zhongyuan's wife died 10 days after being sent to hospital on December 6, 2002. The other 4 people died where they were found.
Yang Xinhai later confessed that he used an iron hammer to kill the 5 family members on December 6, 2002. He buried the hammer near a tomb at night and threw his bloody clothes into a river. Yang then walked 2 hours to the city of Luohe. He said he used a new hammer for each murder. Yang dropped out of school in 1985 and began to travel to other regions working as a hired laborer.
He was twice sent to re education through labor camps in 1988 and 1991 for theft in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province and Shijiazhuang, North China's Hebei Province. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 1996 for an attempted rape in Zhumadian, Central China's Henan Province. He was released in 2000. That was when his killing spree began. Sources with the local police of Cangzhou, Hebei Province where Yang was arrested said that he killed and raped but not for money. "He committed crimes to merely hurt society" a local policeman was quoted by the Jiangnan Times as saying. During his stay at a detention house in Luohe when asked by other criminal suspects why he killed so many people, Yang said "Killing people is very usual, nothing special."

On August 24, 1990, Night Ripper murdered Sonja Larsen, 18, and Christina Powell, 16, as they slept in their own homes. One of the girls was sodomized, and the other had her nipples cut. On August 27, 1990, Night Ripper murdered Christina Hoyt, 17, by decapitating her, then setting her body on fire. Her naked corpse, with extreme third-degree burns after the fire, was still washed, and posed sexually on the bed, as Jolie Grimmson's had also been. The difference, however, is that this one had extreme third-degree burns from the fire, and it didn't even look like the same person.
The next day, August 25, 1990, Tracy Paules, and Manuel Taboada, both 23, were found dead in their apartments, all 2 with their throats slit. Manuel, in addition to having his throat cut, had his stomach open after receiving so many stab wounds, and his right hand was practically ripped from his wrist. Tracy Paules, on the other hand, was found with a switchblade stuck in her vagina. Night Ripper, without showing any regrets or remorse, continued his murderous career, until he was caught red-handed on September 1, 1991. A cotton swab with traces of his DNA that he left at one of the crime scenes (which he probably dropped it out of his pocket, or something similar) linked him to the earlier Gainesville murders. Night Ripper had "gone low", as the saying goes, and the house had finally fallen to him.
On September 16, 1991, Night Ripper was sentenced to 3 life sentences, plus 170+ years of additional prison terms, still harkening back to the robberies he had committed in Tampa, Florida. On February 15, 1994, he finally pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him. On April 20, 1994, Night Ripper was sentenced to death by electric chair, and was sent to death row. After a last meal of lobster, chicken drumet, chicken breast, baked potato, and strawberry cheesecake, Night Ripper was executed via lethal injection at 6:13 pm on October 25, 2006. His identity without the mask was never shown to the public.

On May 17, 1990, Night Ripper finally got a steady job as a waiter, and at the most luxurious restaurant in town — until, none other than his father, arrived at the restaurant to eat after a long day at work. The father, instead of inspiring his son that he finally got a job, however, and on top of that in one of the best restaurants in town, just started to mock him more, saying: "And when there's no more food, son ? What do you do? Juggling the cups?'' In an "alleged prank" Night Ripper saw that she was clearly disguised as evil. In an act no one expected, Night Ripper followed his father when his father went to the bathroom, and quickly pulled a Five Seven from his pocket, and shot him in the head, and in his father's chest. Her father, even though fallen, and unable to move, survived the attack — however, Night Ripper decided to pack his bags at dawn for Gainesville, Florida, again, knowing that he would obviously be arrested in Mississippi after such a crime. Even if his father was incapacitated, someone else would probably go to the bathroom at one time or another and help him. Another important detail is that the robust bathroom door managed to muffle the shots, and Night Ripper also had to take off his apron – as it was stained with blood. After he nearly killed his father, Night Ripper still continued working normally at the restaurant until his turn came. He was watching to see if anyone was going to go to the exact bathroom where he killed his father, but luckily for him, no one did — and as we've already mentioned, the door was sturdy, and Night Ripper's father might have been screaming for help, but he would not be heard at all. Night Ripper also used the "disguise tactic", walking around in leather jackets, sunglasses, and cross laces when he arrived in Gainesville, Florida, as if he were a biker — that is, wearing clothes that weren't, of course, in fact, not even close to being their original custom — just so no one would suspect it.

On November 6, 1989, Night Ripper committed his first murders, stabbing 3 members of the Grimmson family with a meat cleaver, on a Monday afternoon. Tom and his 8-year-old grandson Sean were repeatedly stabbed in the stomach until they were cut in half. Even though they were already dead, however, Night Ripper ripped off Sean's arm with the cleaver, and stuffed it into his own mouth, as if it were a wild animal. Afterwards, he dropped his arm on the sofa rug and then went towards Tom's corpse, and ripped both of his ears off with his bare hands. Tom Grimmson's 23-year-old daughter Julie Grimmson, a pretty geek, popular at school and "with a bright future ahead of her", nearly had her thigh dismembered, and was hit with a butt on the head, which left a scar. purple as a blunt trauma to his forehead, that being the blow that likely d-passed out — and the signs of his corpse, covered in bite marks with hickeys, and then washed, and sexually posed on his bed, indicate that Night Ripper clearly a-raped. The butt also indicates that Night Ripper had a firearm, and that it was not just the cutlass, which was a melee weapon. He was probably armed with the same Five SeveN he used to shoot his own father inside the bathroom of the restaurant where he worked as a waiter (read more below).
