History
Leonardo was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia on an ungodly hot day on July 19th. His mother had given birth to him in their old farmhouse while his father was off working on the local railroad. In a town that was half on the poverty line and half incredibly wealthy, it helped to have a grandiloquent-sounding name. His father's name at birth had been James "Jimmy" Madden, but he changed it when he married Susanne Dogge, it had helped them some when they moved to new places, sounding like old money though it wasn't long until the people around them could see the trash that followed in their wake.

At 9 years old, his sister Amelia was born in the same room Leo had been born in. It was a surprise to everyone when she was born since his mother had kept it hidden until she went into labor in fear of Leo's father acting out. There was a horrible snowstorm when she finally came, making it hard to get the proper supplies to take care of the two children. 3 years later, their mother would disappear. Leo never seemed to grieve this properly, thinking he needed to stay strong for his baby sister and his father who quickly became a shut-in after this incident.

When Leo turned 13, he got his first job working t the Greenbriar in West Virginia. He took care of the horses, mostly scooping up their droppings and cleaning out their stalls. He had his first cigarette from one of the members who frequently kept his horses at the stables. He made good money at the job, enough to keep him and his sister fed while his father drowned himself in booze and women. Being the sweet and caring boy he was, Leo still looked up to his father, taking in everything her did. When he turned 16, he lost his job with the stables from drinking, sleeping with members' daughters, and being a mess of a person in general. On his way home that day, Leo could see the police cars from 500 feet away. Leo sprinted towards the door, though a policeman halted Leo in his tracks just as his father was escorted out of the house covered in the neighbor's blood. Leo's father was convicted of attempted murder since the neighbor had barely survived.

It didn't take much longer than that for Leo to take his now seven-year-old sister and as much money as they had and flee to Pointe à la Hache, Louisiana. There, he enrolled Amelia in school, posing as her father since he had aged from work and stress, giving him the appearance of a 20-year-old, though he did enroll himself in school there as well, just in a different district. They rented a small apartment from one of his bosses, infested with rats and bugs but they made it their home for the next 3 years. Leo picked up jobs where he could, mostly taking an interest in landscaping and gardening for the wealthier folks in the area. He met 42-year-old Candance Whitaker on one of his jobs, she was friendly and quite pretty but he kept an arm's length away from her at all times.

After a bright and promising senior year with scholarships to a larger school for baseball and academics, he went to work at his landscaping job for the summer. On one particularly hot summer, Mrs. Whitaker had made drinks for them to celebrate his acceptance into Duke but quickly found himself not being able to stand or remember much the following day. In the morning, he found himself being woken up by the feeling of two hands yanking him up by his shirt. Mr. Whitaker had come home and thrown Leo out, firing him and having him fired from his landscaping job. The grief that followed him, haunted him. He felt himself turning into his father, selling drugs to get by, thinking about selling his body just to pay for books but it wasn't worth it and he withdrew his acceptance to go to Duke. After working at a local Thai restaurant and selling drugs on the side for nine months, he received a call from a blocked number for him to go to the hospital to receive DNA testing where they would find he is the father of an abandoned 1-month-old boy. Leo named him Franklin after The Grateful Dead song he had loved so much. Instantly, he was the boy's father but in his life, one good thing happens and one bad thing has to happen.

After Amelia was taken by the foster care facility, Leo again took all the money he could find and moved himself and Franklin to Pacific City, Oregon. There he found peace, working under the table at a local pub while living at another run-down apartment until he saved enough to put a down payment on a bar. He runs it now with his best friend Henry, an older man who helps raise Franklin and get him to and from school. Franklin is now 8 and is a happy well-adjusted child. Leo still is damaged by his past, seeing it every time he looks at his child, every time he calls Amelia, and every time he gets a call from the White Sulfur Springs county jail. It's all still there, haunting him as he goes through his day-to-day life.
