Queen Oya Abara Tafari of the Yoruban Empire

Introduction: The Dark South is a mysterious area where many secrets are hidden. One of the greatest mysteries is Oya, the Queen of the newly formed Yoruban Empire. No one knows for sure where she came from, only that before her the land was poor and divided by corrupt kings and warlords that hoard the wealth. She acts strangely chaotic, or at least she pretends to treat things like a casual game. It frightens everyone because she's good at it.

Name: Oya Abara Tafari

Nicknames: Abby, Lady of Storms.

Age 19 to 35

Gender: Female

Species: Dark Elf

Occupation: Empress of the Yoruban Empire

PERSONALITY:
Like any character, she would have several masks depending on who you ask. The most common view is that of a Machiavellian scheme or a vicious ruler. And given her very secluded environment, that is the only side that's seen. Oya is an extremely observant person, normally keen on picking up the tiniest details especially when it comes to human behaviour. That's how she's survived this long. She's largely an investigative person.

She's a very distrustful yet extremely honest person. She follows through on promises even when it's inconvenient. But she would not trust people to do the same. Her current passion had made her very guarded regards to her relationships. Sleeping out is common and happens anytime. But she has very few close relationships.

TALENTS AND ABILITIES:

Fencing- Her favourite style of execution is using an energy sword she designed. The weapon has a rough mixture of science and technology, poured by a battery that's normally part of her dress, it can cut through anything like butter, clean. However, the wire connected to the blade is a critical weak spot. So she never chooses to fight with it, mainly using it as an executing weapon. If she fights with it, it's normally strictly defensive. At this point, her fencing talents are on point enough to hold her own.

Shooty- She's a much better shot than a fencer. Her weapon normally includes a cleanly polished thunder pistol. A weapon enchanted and uses thunder powder to create powerful blasts of plasma. And to her side, she has a floating skull, Orb of Harvest. The Orb can allow her to perform tribal magic, though its main purpose is to stabilize the thunder pistol. She knows how to personally make thunder powder to power the gun. Normally both the gun holster is underneath the scabbard, her staff is usually hidden.

Tribal magic- The Orb of Harvest is her magnum opus, her invention that floats beside her like a pet. She's a master of enchantments based on that achievement and the ability to make thunder powder. The Orb's primary purpose is to stabilize the gun. But it also absorbs energy, normally from fresh carcasses. The skull can absorb the life essence of three corpses, and then release it in an extremely destructive blast when she shoots her gun.

BACKSTORY:
The Dark South is a mysterious place, dry and hostile. There's grassland near the coast which gets progressively harsher until it's pure savannah. Many nomadic tribes exist here, going to the rivers and doing some basic agriculture. Even deeper South is the kingdoms, the developed civilizations. The land was divided into serval scrawling kingdoms. A collapse that happened 200 years ago had left the land in disarray. The kings and warlords hoarded the wealthy and fought constant wars. Many people moved to a nomadic lifestyle to escape. And those who remained in the towns and cities suffered from frequent droughts and famines.

The period that lead Oya to create a new Empire has been shrouded in mystery. But what people knew for sure was that mass protests across all the kingdoms started when information on water mismanagement was leaked. The mass protests began and eventually got more organized with funding, and soon almost every kingdom had suffered a coup within the same time frame of a few months. Many generals, politicians and businessmen were executed, vanished or murdered by mysterious means.

When Oya came into power, she had a collection of 500 skulls on display all categorized and named. Every skull of the former monarch, and immediate family members, plus high-ranking generals, politicians and others who were a hindrance. She seemed to have murdered her way to certain positions but ran things efficiently to make sure nothing collapsed.

Those by her side had been selected after a pro-democracy movement asked to speak to her. She recently appointed a Prime Minister and arranged for some political restructuring.

ENVIRONMENT

The Great River is the largest river that empties up into the northern sea. The river supports a lot of plant life and there are even a few forests that may occasionally form lower south. The water comes from a large mountain range in the western region.

The more east, the drier with plenty of savannahs and grasslands, these lands are dotted with smaller rivers. All the cities are within the savannahs, next to the smaller rivers. The Western regions flood every rainy season, bringing a lot of soil and water to the savannahs.

Plenty of canals collect the river waters bringing them to each city. Between the cities are normally nomadic or semi-nomadic groups. They normally move to the west during the dry season, then they go back east before the heavy rains flood everything. There's a rough border that cities don't cross because it's too close to the danger zones, where yearly floods happen.
