Lost Log of a Minikin

Since the advent of the Troubling Times, the fog either grows thinner, or we are able to adapt to it. While it is in our nature to survive, it hasn't been without a cost... our breathing grows weak and our ankles and feet atrophy... we know this isn't how it will end, but I have honestly never wished for death's embrace more than I have now.

Joining a pack and being unable to pull my weight from my poor health affects my place in the hierarchy and therefore, I am shown aggression and animosity from the other members. This is sowing resentment, and I need a way out of here, I need a way to make it out of this alive-

(The journal passage ends here, there is some dried blood in a singular drop in the corner of the page.)

The Fey, and other creatures-

Being spirits born from the dirt, Fey creatures have a Spirit Seed at their Cores which can be replanted in soils or sediments that will regrow their bodies. There are many powerful things in Limbo, and Fey are the most persistent.

A Fey will always choose to persevere. Perseverance doesn't look the same for them all, of course...

Fey types:

Elves
Treants
Sylphs and Pixies
Dwarves
Gnomes
Minikin "The Little People"
Black dogs
Nymphs
Dryad
Gremlins
Aerials
Changelings
Elementals
Spiritfolk (rare)
Humans (rare)

I will go on a whim and deem dragons at their roots, to be a Fey and a magical beast. Reptilians are descendants of Ancient dragons that lost their wings. Reptilians, like their ancestors come in different colors to match their wide array of personalities.

Pisceans are creatures that abandoned the ocean as its depths grew too dark and inhospitable. They found themselves unable to fully leave their previous homes, and will make their settlements along the Coastlines.

The Minikin, or The Little People, are a race of quirky individualists, idealists and artists who prefer to remain in the wilds of Limbo. The impending disaster that deteriorates their world has left many to retreat into societies to choose a family to offer servitude...

All the while, a few remained in their wilting world and form packs out of necessity. This has caused a rift in the balance of their kind, and created a cruel polarity-

Helpingkins are the Minikin who chose to live in the safe confines of The Grey City. More often than not, they can be identified by having the finest of manners, tastes and lifestyles. They are commonly seen wearing collars to show they have been taken in and are a member of a family.

Feralkins are the Minikin who remained in the Wild. Classified as "feral" due to the reversal of their cognitive development, as living in a hopeless place can lead to tragedy. Feralkins will choose individuality as much as they can, until it becomes impossible to persevere without mutuality. Creating pack like communities will eventually lead to conflict and quarrel as these particular people prefer independence and free thought.

Worldbuilding rules of purgatory

A forsaken realm that lies in a ruinous state of many past civilizations that toppled litter the land, reclaimed all by gnarled and withered looking flora and fauna. The more you find yourself looking at the scenery, the less you wonder, the less you question, and the more befuddled (your character) feels.

At the heart of this strange place beats The Grey City, the city is a beacon of civilization, and is deemed the safest place to be (by who?) despite the unsettling choices in architecture and a Lich Queen that everyone seems to fear and revere in equal measures.

Within the Lich Queen's Castle, she is rumored to reside in her Catacombs, sorting the bones of eons worth of things dead and constructs them into farther "decoration" for architecture and infrastructure purposes. At the lowest point of these catacombs is also believed to house the soul of the Lich Queen in her "Well of Sorrow". No one has seen it (NPCs), but there are many texts and folk stories of what this well is and what it looks like.

This particular Purgatory exists on the fringes of Unreality, and is classified as a "Where-ever World" where lost and sad things end up. Individuals lost in their prior lives find themselves here and soon forget their lives prior. Many are also spirited away, or brought through the Veils of their own world by native denizens. Fey are commonplace, namely Non-Trooping types that are not aligned to a good or evil Court. Neutral fey in this realm are fickle, and by human standards can range from being cruel on a whim just as they are benign and willing to assist someone in need... for the right exchange of course.

Souls of those long dead tend to roam and haunt the world, much like our characters, they don't know their past lives and are prone to Corruption. Upon Corruption, they will Possess other characters, animals and places of interest and can be deemed a "Horror" if their burdens become too great and too many.

Horror is the true Antagonist of this world, as it lurks in every corner of all things. It watches and waits for the opportune time to cause Calamity, much like a predator circling it's prey. Horror is an ambiguous concept, and can be anything and everything all at once.

The Lich Queen and The Hag of The Wastes collaborated on a rare occasion to form an alliance of Oracles. The Oracles of Limbo have spiritual connection to entities from Higher Places, Lower Places, and The Ether. While they have been deemed protectors, they can become a threat alike. Therefore, reception of Oracles varies, they are welcomed in oppressed reaches of the land, while they can be feared and ostracized by many superstitious societies.

(Oracles will be expanded in another blog post.)

Lost Log of a Resident

Day 1 of The Darkness

Last night a fog rolled over the land, cold and heavy. Difficult to breathe, and getting more difficult to think. The fog feels more like a vapor, inhaling doesn't hurt... at least not at first, my lungs feel heavy and my back begins to feel tight...

Are the thoughts in our mind beginning to circle? Are we making sense? What is happening to us and the world that suddenly feels so strange? It's almost as if we have never been here before... yet the walk down the river feels nostalgic. The babbling of the running water is all we can hear in the dead of the Darkness despite the feeling of something else out there. There are no physical signs... at least not yet-

Day 2 of The Darkness

We were awoken to horrible sounds outside of our shelter. Despite every ounce of sense to remain hidden, we went to investigate anyway only to discover nothing. As it turns out, only one of us heard the whimpering, the wailing of some unknown creature in the Dark that may or may not exist...

It was me...

Day 3 of The Darkness

I thought there was more of us. My logs indicate more than one person present alongside me... and yet I see no one near. Signs of other life within the shelter seems evident. It has only been three days in this malaise, and I can already feel my sanity slipping away, and all my cognitive ability to leave safety dwindles... I don't think I'm going to survive.

Day 4 of The Darkness

Survival seems unlikely, my shoulders seize and cramp from trying to minimize my posture. The horrible sounds are getting louder and closer. Alone and afraid I have no choice but to accept The End. I have spent many hours cataloguing different aspects of my days. After the Darkness came, all 4 days feel the same and it seems I can't remember anything that transpired in my life before it. What is happening? Why is it happening?

Please, someone help me-

The journal entries stop, there are naught but blank pages until the end... The final page has what appears to be a smudged doodle of a black, sickly looking creature. The nature of the drawing feels familiar and unsettling, like something that hangs at the deepest corner of a place you wouldn't dare to look.
