Bio: As a child, life for Eugene was perfect. He was a normal farm boy working the fields with his father and younger brother in the morning and after school. Eugene ate good food made by his mother and played games with his brother all the time. He loved to sit out in the sun and just lie in the fields, soaking in all of the energy and warmth. It was all a dream. But eventually Eugene would have to wake up. As Eugene grew older, his father’s problems started to become more and more apparent. The higher the bills grew, the more the man drank. Eugene would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of his father stumbling through the front door, tipsy as the devil, listening to his mom whisper shout at him as he simply ignored her and fell asleep in the kitchen or on the living room couch or in the hallway. They were going to lose the farm. School became a second priority and eventually, Eugene and his brother dropped out of school to help the farm all day and all night since their father slept through the mornings and drank through the evenings. Eugene’s mother tried her best to keep the family together and though they were all close, their father was the outlier that was managing to tare everyone apart.
One evening, after a long night at the bar drinking, Eugene’s father set the house, barns, and fields on fire. Eugene had managed to wake up from the smell of burning wood and smoke filling his lungs, coughing up a storm as he sat up in his bed and looked outside to see the beautiful flames licking at everything around him and everything he loved. Eugene tried to wake up his brother, tried to get him up and out the window with him, but the fire was getting close and Eugene made a decision that night that he would regret for the rest of his life, a decision that left him completely and utterly alone. When the fire department finally came, it was too late. The house had collapsed onto itself leaving no survivors and the fields they had worked so hard to maintain were now nothing but black soot and the barn that once stood tall and proud was now just barely standing. Eugene was found outside on the lawn, passed out from the amount of smoke he had inhaled but he was alive, quickly rushed to the hospital as the search for other survivors commenced. But the boy already knew that there was no one else.
An old family friend named Jackson took in Eugene as his guardian and paid for his clothes and school and medical bills, tried to help Eugene settle in however he could. But that once bright and shining sun of a boy was never the same; He turned introverted, barely speaking more than a word and not doing his school work, simply laying out in the fields when he got home or ditching school all together to visit his old property to just stare at the burnt remains. At night, he’d nightmares of the fire, always regretting that he couldn’t get his brother out in time or his mother or do anything at all but save himself, keeping a picture of his family in his wallet at all times.
When Eugene turned 19, Jackson passed away and left the boy all his money and property. It was enough for him to get by for a few years but soon he had to find other means of work and found his skill in fighting. He joined a fight club of sorts not soon after and won most nights; he was a farm boy after all and knew how to fight better than anyone around. Eugene has been alone since Jackson passed, rarely speaking to anyone other than small ‘hellos’ to the market owner, isolating himself from everyone. The town was rather small but word traveled and they all knew about his past, pitying him more than anything. Though quiet, he’s not cold, having a soft heart to most though showing it in actions over words. He enjoys this simple life, maintaining a small farm and taking care of animals and getting out his anger. It was good enough for him for now.
