Wei Wuxian is a tall, thin, handsome man of Chinese descent, with bright laughing eyes and a mouth that’s often curved up into an easy smile. He wears his hair long, usually up in a half-ponytail, held in place with a long red ribbon. He’s usually seen wearing a combination of blacks and reds, and, occasionally, grey or dark blues, often layered over each other, and he is almost always seen with his flute, a black instrument with red tassels, tucked into his belt.

History:
Wei Wuxian’s parents passed away when he was 5 years old and, for the next four years, he wandered the streets and survived mostly by fighting for thrown-away or leftover food from market stalls. He managed, though the experience left him with a crippling fear of dogs. When he was 9, one of his mother’s old friends, Jiang Fengmian found him and brought him back to his home in Lotus Pier, where he grew up as the senior disciple of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, and adopted son of Jiang Fengmian, the Sect Leader. He had a difficult relationship with his adopted family, especially Yu Ziyuan, Jiang Fengmian’s wife, and Jiang Cheng, his adopted brother and future Sect Leader – but he loved them with all his heart, and was a dedicated and loyal disciple to Yunmeng Jiang.

When they were fifteen, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and their oldest sister, Jiang Yanli were sent to the Cloud Recesses to study. During his time there, Wei Wuxian got into a lot of trouble because of his nature, as well as his curiosity and unconventional way of thinking. He also met Lan Wangji, and became entangled with Gusu Lan Sect's search and defence of the Yin Iron, which lead to the eventual destruction of Yunmeng Jiang Sect, the death of his adopted parents and his brother losing his Golden Core.Since he was unable to find a way to fix Jiang Cheng's Golden Core, Wei Wuxian then gave up his own core for his brother. Without his Golden Core, he was unable to cultivate in the way he had done all his life.He was captured and thrown into the Burial Mounds, a place so full of resentful energy that no one could purify it or survive there, and left to die. Instead, after three months, he came out of the Burial Mounds, having invented demonic cultivation, which gave him access to that resentful energy, channeling it into the control of spirits/puppets/fierce corpses.

As Wei Wuxian returned to the battlefield in what became known as the Sunshot Campaign, the full power of his cultivation was revealed, and his Stygian Tiger Seal - refined from a sword made of Yin Iron, became the cause of much controversy and jealousy. He became further and further removed from his family and his friends, lost in the resentful energy of his cultivation, as well as ostracized further and further for his methods and by others’ jealousy. It eventually came to a head when he found out that the Lanling Jin Sect, who seemed to come out of the Sunshot campaign at the top of the cultivation world, were torturing innocent people who happened to have been related to the Wens, a pair of siblings that had saved his life. He demanded their freedom, fought with them when they were denied it and escaped with them to the Burial Mounds, where they set up something that was almost a home.

During this time, cut off from the rest of the cultivation world, rumors of the Yiling Laozu started going around - all sorts, blaming him for all kinds of things, pointing at his unorthodox method of cultivation as evil - he became the enemy of the people, but also a figure of much intrigue for others - and so, the legend of the Yiling Laozu grew. The rest of the cultivation world, however, didn't leave him alone, and their hounding resulted in the death of his sister's husband, the Wen remnants Wei Wuxian had tried to save, and finally, in his confrontation with the other cultivators, his sister.

Feeling lost and hopeless and alone, he finally destroyed the Stygian Tiger Seal, throwing it into the crowd of gathered cultivators and watching them fight each other for the pieces. Seeing no real future, he stepped off a cliff edge and, despite Lan Wangji's attempt to save him, to his apparent death. Thirteen years later, Wei Wuxian was resurrected through the use of a Sacrifice Ritual by Mo Xuanyu, for which he was cursed to extra revenge on those who had harmed Mo Xuanyu in the past, pushing him to the point of sacrificing himself to bring the feared “Yiling Laozu” back from the dead.

Wei Wuxian found himself once again in the middle of mysterious plots and power play, revealing the hidden figures behind events of the past - and of his own past life. He’s very skilled in inventing and creating talismans, curses, protection, and other spiritual-based tools. He also uses great deductive reasoning and observation skills. He’s still got some sword-fighting skills, as well as his archery skills, but they’re more a talent now than a power his “golden core” is too underdeveloped to put real power into his fighting.

The flute is black and adorned with red tassels, representing both its demonic cultivation origins and Wei Wuxian's rebellious nature. Chenqing possesses powerful spiritual resonance, enabling Wei Wuxian to control and manipulate resentful energy, a unique form of dark energy associated with the dead. Through the haunting melodies played on Chenqing, Wei Wuxian can summon and command spirits, control corpses, and perform various demonic cultivation techniques. The flute, Chenqing, is originally a part of the Yin Iron set created by Suibian, a renowned craftsman.

Empathy: he is able to channel his energy into a being/spirit/fierce corpse and see its past memories.

Paper metamorphosis: he can affix part of his soul to a small paperman and animate it, enabling it to have a small life of its own – the paperman’s ability is dependent on how much of his soul he puts into it, and ranges from just being animated to be able to fully support his consciousness.
