Dante - The Soul Bound (Demonic form)

Name

Demon form: Dante

Species: Demon, Soul bound

Age: 350

Personality: Dante is a violent soul, craving power, and a chance to crush those weaker than himself. Whilst he greatly detests being bound to the soul of a human, he doesn’t hate Dominic, having somewhat of a pity towards the boy. He has always held a protective nature over Dominic, forcing control to protect him whenever he gets in over his head. Part of him longs to break their curse and be free to do as he wishes once more, yet he has also grown fond of his human companion.

Whilst Dante is nothing but a violent creature of hatred on the surface, he is reasonably well graced in his social etiquette when needed. He has spent his time trying to understand the complicated emotions of humans and whilst he will often step over the line with things, he does attempt to respect Dominics wishes where he can. He will never admit to his fondness though, seeing it as a weakness others might exploit if discovered.

Powers: Dante’s powers lie in shadow manipulation. Once upon a time he was a demon who could become seamless with the shadows and darkness around him. Someone who was greatly feared and deemed near untouchable. Yet since his soul was bound to its human host a large amount of that power in turn was locked away.

When not in control Dante is simply able to speak to Dominic within his mind, though it takes some effort to push past the boy’s resistance. When he does gain control of the body, he takes on a more demonic form, in this form he becomes stronger and more agile. He is still able to wield some degree of his demonic power, creating shadowy armour and weapons with which to fight with, though he can only maintain these constructs for a limited time. He can slip into shadows temporarily though this is at a great drain on his power, and he cannot use them to transport from place to place as he once could at his full power.

Weaknesses: Dominic, he has grown soft for the human to which he is bound, magical sources of intense light such as angelic light, he is only able to draw upon his powers for a limited time due to the bound nature of his soul. The more he utilizes this power the more rapidly this source declines. He is unable to maintain permanent control over Dominics body.

Likes: Violence, watching people suffer, when he is in control of the body, watching Dominic work through his eyes, examining the strange emotions of humans.

Dislikes: Those that bring harm to Dominic, Dominics parents (though he doesn’t express the true reasoning why), when he is forcefully supressed, those that bound him.

Background:
Dante was once a widely feared demon of one of the larger royal families, his powers leading many to believe he was untouchable as he ruled over a large faction of demons on his own. Few would dare stand up to him and those that did often met a swift and violent fate at his hands. He remembers his homestead and the army that served under him, alongside those that stood by his side in his rule.

Yet what he does have little recollection of, is the one that managed to finally get one over on the almighty demon. A vague memory of being plunged into darkness unfamiliar than that of his shadows, a crushing weight pressing in around him before his soul was ripped from its physical form. It felt as though he had been chained up, locked away to never see the light of day once more, then eventually there was a spark of light.

It would take some time to realise that he had been bound to another soul, even longer to discover that soul was human, too weak to truly accept him attempting to test his bounds. He could sense the fragile nature of his prison and yet with no knowledge on what would happen if his new host were to perish, he would bide his time. It was an odd sensation watching a world go by without being able to stretch out a hand to influence it, yet slowly his vessel became stronger, able to withstand small attempts for him to push against the walls that boxed him in.

When his host would sleep, he would test the waters, slowly understanding what control he could take, how much power he could reach and what he could use with this new form. He had planned to continue to work in secret till that first time he had felt his host was in true danger. Out of a fear for his own existence more so than that of Dominic’s own safety, he would try and claw control of their physical form, managing to subdue the would-be attacker before slipping into unconsciousness himself.

It was the first time he had taken true control, yet it seemed that doing so was at a great expense to himself. Whilst this newfound ability allowed him to step in and protect the body when needed, he had yet to discover how to communicate with the other soul that he was tethered to, it was as though a wall kept the pair firmly separated. This wall was shattered the night that Dominic’s father tried to kill his child, Dante stuck helplessly watching the scene unfold outside his grasp, having burnt up too much power to retake control. He shouted with all his might for the boy to move, to run, to do anything. He saw the blade raise high in the air ready to strike. Then it appeared he was heard, a sudden rush of newfound energy allowing him in the briefest of moments to land a strike that bought the pair time to escape.

From there the connection between souls strengthened steadily. It was discovered that when Dominic was willing, taking control and communicating came at significantly less strain, allowing for a new freedom for Dante. Yet that wasn’t to say that the pairs relationship was not strained. When explaining to the boy what he believed was how they came to be, Dominic had rejected such an idea, refusing to accept such a fate had been placed upon his shoulders. Whilst over time that rejection has softened, the relationship between Dante and Dominic remains strained.

Dante still wishes to find a way to separate the pair and regain his own existence, though his view has shifted from one of not caring what happened to his host, to one of wanting to ensure when all is done Dominic is given the freedom to live a life of his own afterwards.
