appearance . . .
* note: all mentions of left and right in this section are assuming that the viewer is looking at him from their pov.

he is a tall, relatively lean, and attractive individual with many oddities about him. his skin is ghastly and pale, with cold, nearly grey undertones with few blemishes, aside from a jagged, pink facial scar that starts just above his right eyebrow and ends at the edge of his left cheek, going completely across his face, as well as a scar of the same nature all around his neck. his sunken eyes, surrounded by darker, tired skin, are a phosphorous green. his eyelashes are long. this hardly matters, though, seeing as his bangs almost always obscure the upper half of his face from vision. his hair is silver, reaching below his hips, with braided sections akin to chains that go all the way down to the ends of his hair. his hands are sleek, the outline of his carpal bones visible in the backs of his hands. his fingers are long and slender, with long, black coffin shaped nails. some fingers are even adorned with rings -- two on his right hand, to be exact -- one on his little finger, the other on his pointer finger.

his ears are pierced. both of them have a double lobe piercing, with either thick hoops or captive jewellery that can range from being black or a very dark chrome grey colour. however, his right ear has a single inner cartilage piercing at the top, of which is just a black stud. his left ear has an industrial piercing, a dark coloured barbell that goes through two sections of cartilage at the top of the ear.

his clothing, always black, often obscures his figure from view. his usual attire consists of a funeral robe called a cassock that goes down to just above his ankles, with long sleeves that tend to cover his hands. on his head is a strange, black top hat, with a long tail of fabric that trails behind his head and down his back. he wears a sash of sorts of grey fabric that is hooked around his right shoulder, a knot at his left hip. across his waist rests a chain of lockets, of which he calls his "treasure."

his face is handsome, although many are not aware of this fact, as it is nearly always partially obscured from view due to his bangs. he has strong yet sunken cheekbones, a long, pointed nose, and thin, pale lips. his eye shape is narrow, as if stuck in a state of permanent amusement.

he smells of funeral lilies, ashes, dust, and dirt.

character bio . . .
undertaker is a very silly, enigmatic, eccentric, and sporadic individual. he has a very hard time taking anything seriously, unless he feels that it is crucial. he tends to giggle and laugh quite a bit, finding most things amusing. it could also just be a habit of his. although he is a grim reaper, he blends in with human society as a mortician and funeral director, even an info broker, of sorts. he refuses to accept the queen's money for his services, and instead, will provide them if his customers give him a 'first rate laugh'. he also enjoys baking -- though, he uses some of his mortuary tools as baking tools and tea cups, as well. don't worry! he washes them . . . (maybe). he can be clumsy, as his eyesight, being a grim reaper, is absolutely horrible, and he refuses to wear glasses. the fact his eyes are constantly obscured by his bangs does not help, either. however, this does not hinder his ability to fight, or carry out important tasks.

underneath this silly exterior, undertaker is obsessive over the prospect of death, and the dead, as well as the fragility of human life. his penchant for humour and constant desire for entertainment comes from needing to ease the burden of being constantly surrounded by the voices and screams of the recently departed that echo within his head. furthermore, amusement is one of the only human emotions that undertaker is capable of experiencing. he is only really capable of experiencing empathy for the dead, as he lost his humanity years ago when he became a grim reaper. as he grows older, his ability to experience human emotions as well as recall memories fades and grows fuzzy, to the point that his emotions, past or present, are unidentifiable. he is not /emotionless/, though -- in fact, he is still very observant of human behaviour and can tell whether something is wrong or the matter, and will still try and extend the offer of comfort, even if it is awkward. he happens to just be severely emotionally handicapped when it comes to understanding the human emotions of himself and other (living) people. humans, with the only exceptions being a Select few, are nothing more to him than potential experiments and even future cadavers, as he only experiences scientific, anatomical, and thanatological interest towards them. he uses most if not all of his interactions with other people as opportunities for the analysation of human life before death. because of this, he is permeated by a sense of longing, although he cannot identify that feeling nor understand why he feels that way. it feels like an emptiness he cannot fill, to him. he cannot understand these feelings due to the fact he does not view himself to be human, or capable of human thought or expression.

once he takes an interest in something or some/one/, he grows obsessive. this is /not/ a good thing, and most of the time, it is not out of /love/. he grows controlling and possessive, constantly trying to implement his own various experimental ideas and digging for amusement. when specifically considering a possible bout of obsession towards a human being, he may be interested in ending this relationship with their death. an example of this is his obsession with ciel phantomhive, and often asking him when he will ever be able to "fit him" for one of his coffins. despite it sounding like a joke, it very much is not one. in fact, if he is interested enough in concluding the life of a person, he will either reap their soul himself, or see how long it takes to push them into taking their own life. once this individual is dead, he is not against taking the opportunity to dissect their body during the process of embalming, taking the time to look into every little aspect he had found himself taking an interested note of from the moment he met this person, from the very Beginning, while they were alive.

however, he treats his "guests" (this is how he refers to the dead, corpses or otherwise) with the utmost respect, and will never defile a body on purpose. in fact, no matter whether the corpse is immediately headed for the grave or is to be presented at a funeral, he always will make sure to beautify the corpse, dressing it and applying makeup and prosthetics to honour it in its final moments before eventual decomposition.

undertaker sees human lives in a very similar manner as the artists of vanitas and memento mori still life art pieces. he sees human life as fragile and fleeting, and looks down upon those who mindlessly fill their lives with vanity and luxury, as those, too, are fleeting and superficial. this may be another reason as to why he refuses the "queen's money" as payment for his services. he plays with this notion once he digs his claws into a new human life he's grown interested in, even (or especially) without them taking notice, as in his eyes, doing so gives their life more meaning and value -- it gives them a real /purpose/.

traits and trivia . . .
