Often times people are surprise to see a cute, cheerful girl hanging out with the edgy and obscene band of Gorillaz. That's Aliya, the band's photographer. She is Russel's neice and good friend of Noodle. She may not look like she belongs in the band, but she has become a part of their dysfunctional 'family'.

Aliya is the most normal looking out of all the Gorillaz members. She is a young and slender girl, with dark skin, and a huge poof of reddish brown hair. Her hair is a mess of frizz that goes to her knees, but is cut when she is older. She often wears it in afro puffsShe retains a wide-eyed young girl look even up into her late 20s. Usually, her hair is lighter than her skintone. Her skintone is the same a Russel's, maybe a bit darker. She has freckles, and her big brown eyes are often described as doe-like, which keep her looking young.

When she's younger she has her school uniform and a butterfly sweater. Even when she's not in school she sticks to the academia aesthetic but with cute touches.
Later as an adult she dresses more grunge/boho. For lazy days she enjoys wearing some of Russel's old shirts that drown her, they're very comfy. Sometimes Noodle picks outfits for her, from her own closet. She likes fashion but usually doesn't want to stand out too much.

Probably an ambivert. She's pretty social, but easily nervous especially around new people.
PERSONALITY~
Aliya can be described as innocent and naive, a soft girl. She's not naive, she knows a lot about the world around her and has seen some stuff. But she does has an innocent and sweet personality. She sees positive in almost everything and is generally cheerful. She is more quiet than most of the band, and often focuses on art or has her nose in a good book. Before officially becoming the band's photographer, she didn't know what her place in life was and was worried about that. She sometimes is still worried. She doesn't like spotlight, and prefers observing. She's very intellegent, and has many skills but learns things quickly. Aliya loves jokes and having fun, even pranks and poking fun at other's. But she strongly Dislikes when teasing turns to bullying and often has to remind Murdoc that jokes aren't meant to truly hurt someone even if they are are jokes that point out a real flaw or problem. Just like Russel, she is a peacemaker of the group, though doesn't turn to violence or physical restraining like Russel.
FLAWS~
Aliya has terrible anxiety. It probably happened when she was young and ghosts would talk to her. Sometimes they were friendly, and almost acted like old lonely people who needed someone to talk to for comfort. But others were vengeful and hateful. One ghost, was basically like a 'mean girl' who haunted her school because she died there. She would taunt Aliya, tell her rude and cruel things, tell her she is worthless and planted all these insecurities in her head. Other ghosts did similar things, and it all got in her head because she was so young. Her anxiety often stops her from doing things she wanted to do. She's worried about her place in life, her place in the band. She doesn't want to seem like she's freeloading off of Russel. She I'd generally very easily nervous. She has sensitive hearing and hates yelling. She gets really mad at 2D and Murdoc's fighting, and was very please when he decided to be a better man in the beginning of phase 6. Aliya is very stubborn. If you tell her she can't do it she will darn try her best. This also leads to her doing impulsive things, like running away to London.

Growing up, Aliya was called 'ghost girl' mostly mockingly. Some students thought she was neat but most made fun of her and thought she was crazy. Aliya has the ability to see any ghosts and spirits around her, and talk to them. It runs in the family, but skips a generation. A ghost can choose to reach out to her and communicate. This usually results in one of her eyes turning white and her going unconscious as the ghost sends thoughts and it's own flash backs into her mind. Other times she just talks to them like a normal conversation. She used to happily talk to ghosts as a kid, like they were imaginary friends. But now she generally tries to ignore them.

Born and grew up in New York City. Spent most of her life in America, but eventually rebelled and decided to live in London when she became an adult. Sometimes she is in college sometimes she is living with the band.
BACKSTORY~
Aliya is Russel's neice. She grew up in New York in a privileged family. She idolized the Gorillaz growing up. Ever since she was little, it thrilled her to see her uncle on MTV! How amazing was that? She also loved Noodle. She was a KID, yet she was a fanous muscian and wrote a whole album at age 13. She was so excited the first time she got to go visit her uncle at Kong Studios. She went multiple times on different breaks. She went to the same prep school he did. There she became interested in art and literature, but also coding and technology science. She was also in the school band (she played saxophone), and in orchestra (she played violin). She had the same problem Russel did as a child, seeing and hearing ghosts. Though lucky for Aliya, she never was possessed by a demon. She got bullied a lot during school, she was called stuff like 'crazy ghost girl' so eventually she just stopped talking about the ghosts she saw and tried to block them out. She graduated, and got a scholarship for college.
Her parents were going through a divorce and yelled all the time, but were also being controlling to Aliya. They didn't want her to go to college, and thought she was too mentally unstable. They also didn't believe in her powers and thought she was having a breakdown and her health was deteriorating. She tried to prove she was fine. Eventually she got frustrated and just ran away.In her school uniform still (she reminded herself to go shopping later) she headed to London, to go stay with Uncle Russ and go to college in London.
She went to Essex and didn't see the Kong studios she had visited before. Just an empty, ash covered hill with bits of green grass poking up. It was gone. Completely gone, all that remained was the gate. She was alone in London and was pretty terrified. She asked people on the streets about the Gorillaz. Most of them could just tell her that they did 'Clint Eastwood' and 'Feel Good Inc'. When she emphasized where they were, someone eventually told her to look on there website. She did, and learned about Plastic Beach and their new albums. She got the coordinates from Murdoc's wacky-ass radio show and took a boat out there. She found Murdoc and Cyborg but no Russel. Or 2D or Noodle.
From then on she was with the band most of her life, going to college too but also living with them. Russel supported her financially. She was an art student, particularly photography. One of her senior assignments was to make a photo book of one subject, chronicling the changes and journey over time. What better to pick than Gorillaz, the weirdest band ever? Boy that made for an interesting book of photos. The class loved it, following Gorillaz through their career was an A+ project. They all loved her work and eventually wanted her to be their profession photographer. She was known for capturing great candid moments of the band just being themselves. And she captured a lot of funny moments too. She also managed the social media pages at least image wise.

•She and Noodle met once first at Kong Studios. Aliya was freaked out by the place because she could see the ghosts and the general atmosphere was pretty spooky. She was honestly too young to be in Kong studios but she got dropped off there while her parents were away. To stop her from having a breakdown, Noodle dragged her into her room. "I make my room not scary, I like it cute!" Noodle exclaimed in flipped on the string lights on her ceiling as the room glowed. "Wow, it looks like Japan!" A young Aliya exclaimed. Noodle nodded and they had a dance party in her room. Aliya always liked Noodle from then on, because Noodle made her feel comfortable in Kong studios.
•Her and Noodle reunited at the beginning of phase 4. Noodle had grown up, and she was HOT. Aliya very soon got a crush on her.
•They hang out all the time, Noodle is happy to have someone that isn't a boy around all the time. Aliya loves photographing Noodle, calls her her 'muse'.
•Russel very much approves of Noodle and Aliya dating. He got all mushy and teary eyed when they told everyone. Noodle is his 'daughter' and Aliya is he niece, and the two thought there might be problems with that. But Russel doesn't see it that way, he likes them together since he loves them both, and there's no legal problems since they aren't actually cousins at all, no blood relation.
•Noodle doesn't care that Aliya is asexual. Like it's no problem for her. She's not a sex maniac like Murdoc. Later Aliya learned that Russel is also homoromantic asexual (well grey-sexual for Russ) and he told her it's okay not to be obsessed with sex.
Cyborg:
•This does vary depending on timelines but here's one timeline I can use for Aliya if she is with Cyborg. Aliya showed up at Plastic Beach, after all recording was done. Aliya was looking for Russel, but only found Murdoc. And Cyborg. Cyborg was initially suspicious of Aliya and their first interaction was actually her holding a shotgun to her. She wasn't at Plastic Beach for long and then the Black Cloud attacked the island. Murdoc shouted, "Cyborg, you protect that kid too now!" And she did. Cyborg was the bodyguard for the two of them now. That's where their friendship began, if you can call it that. They escaped in a submarine, where Aliya talked to Cyborg, and did some minor repairs on her. At that point, Cyborg couldn't really talk. She could utter a few words, mostly relating commands. And she could sing like Noodle but her singing skills didn't translate into talking. Even though she could say less than 100 words and not really read full sentences, she liked Cyborg's company. Eventually the trio made it back to London.
•Russel was the first to show up to start working on the new album, and Aliya was thrilled to see him. Cyborg started functioning less and less, she couldn't really talk at all anymore, her joints didn't work, and she kept bleeding oil. Later, Cyborg disappeared and Murdoc told Aliya she went out to promote the album. Aliya wasn't fully convinced but she was distracted when Noodle and 2D came back to live with them. About 2 years later Aliya found Cyborg in a closet, non functional. The robot kit Murdoc bought wasn't meant to last that long, he bought that kit because he's a cheapskate. She threw a fit, yelling about how Murdoc was d*ck and basically abandoned his 'child'. She took her out and used her robotics and coding skills to repair her, upgrading her body. She also gave her a much more adequate voice box. She removed the 'kill intruders' instinct from her coding.
•Aliya gave her the name of Cy or Cya. Especially since 2D still didn't like her and she's trying to make her seem less like Noodle.
•The other timeline is she finds Cyborg in disrepair during The Lost Chord video and brings her back to repair her.
