Sam won the competition with the special children but failed to close the gates of hell so the situation was even worse.

After that, Azazel went dark and nobody saw him again, but people talked and something was about to happen because demons were gathering and Lilith was rising. John was there and he was worried about the thought of Azazel being back but for right now he didn't put much thought into that. He was gonna wait for Sam to come back. "
