(Gonna refer to them as Z considering the name difference with gender change)

Z was born into an unloving environment, the product of an affair which pushed their parents apart. When they were 6 the parents finally split up, Z primarily lived with their mother and visited their dad when they wanted to. While their father didn't blame them for what occurred between the parents, funnily enough, the mother did... despite her being the one who cheated. She just wanted to pin the blame onto someone rather than take the responsibility. She started drinking and abusing magical substances, often getting to points when she would force Z to do them with her. This got them addicted early on... to no surprise the mother died of an overdose when Z turned 14 and they then moved in with the father permanently.

From there it was a matter of Z fitting in with the wrong crowd to get their fix. On several occasions, their father pulled them out from rough spots and tried to set them straight to no avail. When they turned 19 they bought a horse from a nearby homestead and just... left. With only a note for the dad that read 'Thanks for trying, but I can't do this anymore'

From there Z became one with the open road, stopping at occasional taverns, sometimes getting a one-night stand to simply have a bed to sleep in or they would have slept rough under the stars. They have their secrets beyond the magic and alcohol but sees no point in telling anyone considering how they don't stick places long.

Where do they get the money for food and clothes? How come they avoid staying somewhere too long? Why don't they make connections and settle?
