Crow was made as a companion for Maria rather than a cure, after the success of Shadow The Hedgehog, Dr Gerald Robotnik strived to make another synthetic Mobian for the young girl to talk to. Since the biolizard's failure to gestate and Shadow's lack of powers Gerald created another ultimate lifeform in the form of the young goat.
He, however, experimented on Crow heavily, leading the goat to forget his memories on board the ARK and instead only remembering his siblings and Maria. When GUN seized the synthetic Mobians Crow was the first to get caught, keeping him from coming to the reality that Maria had been vanquished. He was frozen along with Shadow, only to be awoken years later.
While Shadow was focussed on avenging Maria, Crow decided to take a more relaxed approach to the second chance of life he had been given. He would still fight with his brother, however, he would never choose to fight. But only time would tell he supposed...
He would be there when he was needed.

Test Subject: Shadow the Hedgehog

Artificially born, Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik through genetic engineering as part of an experiment to cure his granddaughter Maria from a deadly illness. These experiments started on The Ark, a ship made to circle Earth and keep Maria safe.
On March 14th 1928, Shadow the Hedgehog was born.
Shadow soon became acquainted with Maria as she was the only friend or other person to confide with in the isolated environment. He held her in high spirits and saw her as his only friend and almost like an older sister. She taught him about the world below and how to live like a normal creature.
Professor Gerald Robotnik also fit inhibitors onto the hedgehog to control his powers - as a young being he would run around at incredible speed, so he was fitted with two large golden bangles that kept him at bay for the safety of everyone.
Maria was a good companion to the dark hedgehog throughout her time with him until she was killed by a GUN soldier while helping Shadow escape them. GUN was initiating an ambush on the Ark to take the hedgehog into custody.
Her final wish was for Shadow to protect humanity and help those in need.
Dr. Eggman, a descendant of Dr Robotnik, set Shadow free from a G.U.N. base on Prison Island, where he had spent 50 years imprisoned in cryostasis. In exchange Shadow agreed to aid the doctor in his plans to take over the world; holding his true intentions as wishing to get revenge for the death of his friend, Maria Robotnik.
To achieve this, Shadow revealed the eclipse cannon to Dr. Eggman, blowing up half of the moon in demonstration. In a twist of fate, Shadow ultimately aided Sonic when realizing Maria's true wish with the help of Amy Rose, which was to save humanity. Eggman in retaliation inserts the final Chaos Emerald, only to initiate a destabilization program on the ARK.
A recording of Gerald Robotnik then revealed that he had made this function to have revenge for Maria, and that the ARK would destroy the Earth.
Meanwhile, Sonic and Knuckles had reached the Central Core, where the Biolizard had been activated. After Shadow defeated it, Knuckles used the Master Emerald to stop the Chaos Emeralds. But the Biolizard, being the prototype of Project Shadow, used Chaos Control to fuse with the ARK, continuing its fall.
Then, using the emeralds, as Super Sonic and Super Shadow, the hedgehogs destroy the Biolizard (the Ultimate Life form prototype), having become a monster named Finalhazard, and using their pooled energies, created a Chaos Control which stopped the fall and consequently saved Earth.
Afterwards, Shadow fell to the earth and was presumed dead, his body having never been found.
