Kabaneri
▪ Kabaneri are a hybrid species of human and kabane. Not quite human but not quite kabane, they are rather individuals with kabane bodies who have managed to prevent the virus from entering the brain, usually by using an asphyxiating restraint. Because of this, kabaneri are able to exist as hybrids, possessing drastically enhanced speed, superhuman strength, reduced sensation to pain, high physical resistance, and rapid healing.
▪ Visually, they can be distinguished from humans by their red/golden eyes, glowing heart and sometimes exhibit pulsing crimson veins under their skin, which resemble the glowing cracks on a kabaneˊs skin. Mumei possesses a restraint around her neck. Removing the restraint grants access to physical power closer to that of a kabaneˊs, but she becomes exhausted from fighting without it for long periods of time and must rest after exerting herself.
▪ Due to the Kabane Virus coursing through their bodies, they require blood as nourishment, but are still at risk of succumbing to the virus without a restraint or enough blood to drink. Because of the nature of the virus, it is suggested that kabaneri are ultimately fated to become kabane, meaning they live on borrowed time.
