After a brawl with challenger Miguel Escobar following the champion’s speech, Billy Hope lost his wife, Maureen, from a stray bullet. Her killer was never found or convicted. For years, Billy never sought treatment for his anger issues, and it cost him the love of his life when he failed to hold himself back from Escobar's instigation, later, his boxing license when he punched the referee during a match.
After poor choices and a plunge in his barbaric trade of boxing due to his severe grief, Billy Hope climbed back to the top following his first professional defeat shortly after his wife’s murder, pulling off victories for charity fights where he met Tick, an experienced boxing trainer. After a title fight against Miguel Escobar, Billy returns both belts back on his shoulders. Whether he can ever love another woman again is unclear.
